The Deja Glitch is about two “strangers” that have a meet cute in a coffee shop, but what Gemma does not know in that moment, is that she and Jack have met before. Stuck in a time loop, Jack has to get Gemma to fall in love with him over just one day in the hopes that together they can break the cycle.
If you are looking for a sweet, easy to read romance and you enjoy time loop stories then this one is for you. It was a solid, quick read. I really enjoyed that it also delved into Gemma’s family relationships as well, and I liked her best friend Lila. I kind of wish we had gotten to see more of her dog Rex though, which sounds weird but I LOVE when the characters dogs are a cute, quirky side character!
Thank you to netgalley for the ARC!

To break out of a 24-hour time loop, all Jack needs is for Gemma to fall in love with him in a single day. All Gemma needs is to remember him first.
This is a time loop romance, and although the Groundhog Day premise has been done ad nauseum, the author manage to make it different enough to make it original without bringing in all of the redundance a time loop usually serves. I knocked off a star right on page 2 for a character pushing her friend to have a drink she doesn't want to have, and for the general conveyance of the idea that you need to have a drink to have fun. Also, it's kind of a stretch to think that everything that happened in this book happened in just a day. Some themes did not resonate with me though (although family is family, you are not obligated to have a relationship with them).

Y'all know by now how much I enjoy romance, and add a touch of fantasy? Sign ya girl up. Big thanks to Dutton Books, Penguin & NetGalley for this ARC to read and Review. The Deja Glitch by Holly James is out TOMORROW and it is a whimsical delight!
We begin with Gemma James having a fairly ordinary day. She's a radio producer and still bouncing back from a very tough breakup. Within pages, she is on her way to her bestie Lila's birthday. Gemma is a gal with a routine and is planning to be home and happily in bed with her dog within hours. But a stranger at the bar catches her eye, and in a very non-Gemma move, she joins him.
What she doesn't know is that this isn't her first meeting with Jack wasn't exactly the case. She runs into him the next morning at her local coffee shop - only she doesn't remember him. And it's then that we learn that while Gemma doesn't know Jack, he certainly remembers her - because he's been reliving this day for the past few months.
I keep these reviews spoiler free, but what a delight it was to watch these two navigate this wild situation. It was romantic, heartfelt and just very fun! The perfect summer read, in my opinion!
I'll be posting this on goodreads, retail sites and my bookstagram @scottonreads

If you have been craving a cozy rom-com like Love Actually for your book stack, The Deja Glitch, is the time loop story for you.
This fast-paced novel from Dutton came out in 2023, and the author describes the focus of her work as telling stories with big hearts and a touch of magic.
The novel opens in a bar with Gemma's favorite song and a guy ordering a distinctly Gemma drink for her. It's strangely familiar and at the end of that first night together, Jack simple pleads, "Please remember me, Gemma."
What the reader discovers is that Jack has been trapped in a 24-hour time loop that only seems to progress when Gemma begins to fall in love with him. The problem is that each time they wake up, she has no recollection of the encounter.
To break out of a 24-hour time loop, all Jack needs is for Gemma to fall in love with him in a single day and so begins a cycle to not only woo her faster but also to see what other ways they can break patterns like finally nailing a work project or reconnecting with a family member or falling a little harder and faster for a guy you didn't know you needed.
The problem that I typically face with time loop stories is a boredom factor with repeating sequences- I don't have the patience for them. The reason this novel worked so well is that the loop is just 24 hours and James fills the reader in on what might have not worked in previous days to keep the plot moving without overwhelming the reader with backstory.
James holds a Ph.D. and it might be why she dedicates a good few pages to a spirited theoretical physicist who offers quote-worthy explanations for why the time loop is occurring. It doesn't always feel believable in magical realusm books, but he reminds us in one statement, "But what is science if not studying the unbelievable until we find enough evidence to believe in it?"
And so you, as the reader will hope that 147 time loops to finally get to that happily ever after will, certainly, have been enough. I loved every moment of this journey especially the nods to films like When Harry Met Sally and Love Actually that are embedded in this book. I know you'll fall in love with The Deja Glitch too and can't wait for you to discover this of you might have missed it on your library shelves.

This romance book doesn’t have an original premise, but it’s so cute and the characters so likable that that is perfectly OK. It’s sweet and fun and a nice light read, perfect for an end-of-summer pick-me-up.
