When Maria vanishes into the Nils Forest, a reporter, Amy, eager to get a bite into a good story and make sure she ensures her own good fortune, chases down every lead she can find. This brings her to the doorsteps of Maria's biological parents and takes her down a rabbit hole of mushrooms and supernatural she's not prepared for.
As always, I love how Castaneda brings the locations to life. Reading about the Kilns totally intrigued me so I had to read up more about it and I never would have known they really existed if they hadn't been intertwined so deeply into this story. The characters were real and their reasons for being engaged in this felt true to life. Admittedly, I didn't like Amy but she wasn't written to be liked, she was written to grow and explore the journey set before her and drag us along.
The lore and fear woven around the disappearances created such a mysterious air and really drew you in deeper. And then the implications at the end of the story made me ache for the characters and what the future held.
I was given an ARC copy with no pressure to review, but not only did I enjoy it, I intend on owning a physical version when it's released. Reality is, you can't go wrong with A Dark Earth Rising novel. You don't have to have read the others, they're great for beginners into the horror realm while still bringing a disquieting sense of reality and dread to keep long-time horror readers entertained. Would recommend.
