A combination of six volumes, this book tracks Abraham LIncoln's life in two sections.  The Prarie Years covers Lincoln up to his election as President in 1860.  Very dense and full of details, the author attempts to show the variety of experiences that influenced LIncoln's career and the belief systems he would bring to the Presidency.
The War Years covers his presidential years and won Carl Sandburg the Pulitizer Prize in 1940.  The War Years includes more than Lincoln's life but also explores information on the Confederacy, the politics that drove the slave holding states to succeed and the surrender at Appomattox.

this was such a pleasure to read. Some may quibble that it has "apochrophyl" stories, but even those tell something about the character explored and thier impact on their surroundings and they are identified as such.
It was a joy to read
