Atonement

Oh hey, a gorgeously written narrative that plays with itself: how indulgent, how banal, how... moving? Well, that's Atonement. There's a lot to criticize here, and obviously much has already been said here; however there is much that is well-done as well, and this is probably getting said as well - though perhaps with more hyperbole. I will say that I feel the novel revolves around the thought of a library and this, this! I find beautiful.

I will, perhaps, expand this review after I've come to terms with the novel on further re-reads. But for now: read it, it's a gooder.

I heard a lot about this book mainly from its success from being adapted into a film. When I finally got a chance to read it I could not put it down, it is brilliant and I really don't want to see the film just in case it changes my perception of it. I would really recommend people read it.

Whilst I believe this book is well-written and a compelling page-turner, making a young child such a vilified antagonist made me feel deeply uncomfortable. I wanted to like this book but I could not even make myself like it because it made me feel so icky.

I think if I had read this before seeing the film then I would have been gobsmacked. However, I think the film did an excellent job adapting the book (pretty faithfully) and didn’t find much extra from reading it.

I found the first half (set in the course of one day) particularly slow going- given I knew the outcome.
