Being already familiar with everything, the story, the loving and grieving for Cecilia and Robbie, the misdirected abhorrence towards Briony, the madness for Marshall, and pity for Lola, I got into this novel expecting to be infuriated and disappointed with the portrayals, with the minds and fates of the characters. However, what a shock it is for me that I almost fell in love with this book.
I started this novel ready to curse Briony, but as I was getting deeply into the narrative, I have realized that the adults—specifically the parents and most especially, Marshall—are deserving of equal blame and shame for the crime. At this stage in her life Briony inhabited an ill-defined transitional space between the nursery and adult worlds which she crossed and recrossed unpredictably. Lack of proper guidance and enlightenment from the grown ups around her, Briony had unfortanely and miserably trapped herself, she marched into the labyrinth of her own construction, and was too young, too awstruck, too keen to please, to insist on making her way back.
However, this reason of being too young, too inoccent, and way too absorbed in her mind as a passionate aspiring novelist is not (and seem to never will be) enough excuse for Briony's offensive deed. As for Robbie, yes, she was just a child. But not every child sends a man to prison with a lie. Not every child is so purposeful and malign, so consistent over time, never wavering, never doubted. But, for Briony, she hadn't intended to mislead, she hasn'r acted out of malice, but who would believe that? Again, she was only a child and it was growing up that helped her to be aware and certain of her actions—and the consequences of it.
I will forever stand by the reason that, indeed, Cecilia and Robbie were robbed of clarity, freedom, and justice, and yes, they both have the rights to be unforgiving, but it isn't solely Briony who commited a fault, and shouldn't entirely alone atone for the grievou act.

This book. Oh my gosh this book. It was so boring and then it suddenly made me SO FREAKIN MAD! I have never been so angry at characters before! And the boring parts were way too long. And then the end! Gaaaahhhhh!
So anyway it's a pretty good read, had to push my way through some of it but hey, I read it in two days. I don't know how to describe this book or to whom I could suggest it. Basically, if you don't want a 100 pages plus narrative of one day through multiple persons perspective and then another long narrative of a different day, you might not like this book.
Overall, I feel enriched by the story that was presented at me. It reminded me that authors are powerful and can change everything you thought you knew (and also make you throw books.) Now it's time to watch the movie and see how it fails.
