I found it difficult to get into the start of the book, feeling as though that I was observing events, some of which may be important and some of which were just pointless. However, when things picked up and the plot became apparent, it was much easier to sit back and read. The middle sections of the book were a quick, engaging read. The epilogue is a disappointment with the lovers' story left unfinished while Briony witters on about her writing and the lives of two pivotal, but minor characters.

In short: difficult to engage with at the start, fantastic in the middle, and disappointing at the end.

LOVED IT especially part 2. Part three made me WEEP

I really thought this was going to be a five star read for me. That being said, going In I did not know it would focus so heavily on the war, which is something I don't enjoy reading about. I found a lot of things interesting. The focus on different perspectives regarding the same event, the way youth was presented, the yearning, and overall I do think it was a good book. Just a bit of a slog at times which I don't love even when it's purposeful. I also didn't really see a huge plot twist. Idk if I wasn't paying enough attention or whatever or I just already knew it ended sadly but it didn't amaze me. Idk I wished I loved it more.

Did it's job too well, the sense of impending doom made me realize I just wanted a happy historical slice of life or romance, rather than something I knew was going to go downhill. Well written, but I can't deal with the type of embarrassment and sadness and misunderstandings in this book.

I am not often not finishing a book but this one I had to drop after 50 pages. I don't even remember what I read.
