(5), richtig gut, sehr hart, aber so toll, die Kriegsszenen, aber auch ihre Arbeit im Krankenhaus, unglaublich toll geschrieben, man kommt nur am Anfang schwer rein.

this was splendid in a completely non-conventional sense, as far as how the novel is broken up and the interesting pacing choices utilised, especially in the first part together with Briony and Robbie's chapters later. despite this choice the theme of Atonement is clear throughout and it was amazing to see how McEwan has allowed space for these themes to breathe on their own without explicitly telling, even when they have to go on this long, meandering journey to find their peace. There is no fear in the writing. And the confidence shows in how beautiful the language is, that we are able to be held spellbound even during long segues of the journey where there is no progression in the plot

i do question, however, how invested some of us truly can be in Robbie and Ceceilia's earlier relationship, as despite the veiled annoyance there doesn't seem much to be a buildup, or perhaps it was hampered slightly by Briony's own POV to the matter. All of this was redeemeed later after the crime but it would've been nice to see their motivations for this relationship, otherwise it just becomes a relationship invested based on the consummation of it and the separation. Despite this it's a beautiful love story.

Briony's story was haunting in all its means, and we feel her guilt and that desire to seek peace. As much of a whisper the supposed climax of their reunion was, it was gripping, to say the least. But then again most of this novel had me spellbound so what can I say

Themes about literary narratives were lost on me

This book was gorgeous! I should watch the show

i cannot believe i gaslit myself into thinking this book would have a happy ending 🤡🤡🤡 anyways i actually loved the writing style - the imagery in particular was fabulous. i found it dragging at certain points but i absolutely devoured the final third of this book, and the postscript chapter broke my heart.

Originally read in March 2004. Really good. Right before WWII the younger sister observes her older sister in a compromising position with a young man who's kind of an adopted son/hired hand. She cries rape and ruins everyone's life. Lots of good war nurse stuff and hand-wringing. Good twisty ending.

I loved the book and the movie. the audiobook is equally good. the reader is wonderful and makes me want to fake a British accent.
