I believe this novel will be one of my favorites. It is hard to describe or dissect the reasons I enjoyed it so much.
The end was so magnificently pulled together, that you find yourself feeling like you've been let in on a big secret the entire time. Everything clicks into place.
The writing is beautiful, and the emotions expressed are so very genuine and pure.
At one point, I started thinking that there was too much beauty and description in a section; Later, I was let in on the fact that I was not the only one who felt that it was over-elaborated, however beautiful it might be.
All of my possible complaints about this book, were highlighted and essentially explained in the story itself. It's so creatively written. I feel for the characters and I have hope for their futures.
Thank you for writing this book, Ian McEwan.
I would recommend this book to most people. It has an air of Who-Done-It and Mystery, Love story, Coming of age, Historical Fiction, Happy Ending, Sad Ending, Cliff Hanger, and a War Story, all wrapped into one neat little package. Brilliant.

There were a lot of things that bothered me about this book. In a word, self-indulgence. Now I can't tell if that's the author's style throughout his novels in which case my distaste would feel justified or if he imposed it on this novel and it's protagonist in particular, in which case it would be equally uncomfortable but intentional and therefore impressive. I was also a little horrified by the stagnation of the protagonist who seems to be the same person at age 13 and 77. Again, could just be facing some uncomfortable truths in this novel or could be poor/unpleasant writing
Oh SNAP! This book took me agesssss to finish, so I’m conflicted on a rating. HOWEVER, I can’t not acknowledge how well written it was.
The use of dramatic irony in the first half was so well done I truly felt ILL at every turn. The imagery created such a clear picture in my brain and I loveddd the utilization of different POVs to describe certain scenes (a writing tactic that could easily become boring/drawn out, but that was not the case here).
I applaud the author for so intentionally painting Briony’s character in a way that makes the reader despise her while simultaneously trying to find some shred of redemption in her. Truly one of the most frustrating characters I have ever encountered. ALSO!!! The fact that the audience is SO aware of how unreliable of a narrator Briony is, and yet we were UNAWARE that it was her narration the entireeeeee book. AH! (WAIT……. I just had a realization….. The author was indeed writing as if Briony was the author (not revealed until the close of the book) SO that makes the points of redemption so much MORE intentional because Briony WOULD want to try to convince the audience that she did have redemptive qualities/deserved some grace. AH)
While some parts of this book did feel slow and drawn out, I think most of that was due to the fact that I watched the movie first…… if that weren’t the case, I think I would’ve been more effected by the plot/more eager to find out the fate of the characters.
