Tim Kleinhert published this edition of Hearn's stories as a companion to The Mountain Witch, which is a pretty brilliant. They're all traditional stories of Japanese ghosts and spirits. It's a great companion to the game, as it offers a wealth of material for the GM, but it's also an excellent collection in its own right. My only real complaint is that there were one or two footnotes that had apparently gotten cut off in the editing process, so they were incomplete. Other than that, it's a great collection.

The movie is vastly more imaginative and weird, but this is short and reads quickly. Some of the stories are absolute nonstarters, and the final essays on insect life (seemingly from a different work altogether) are oddly compelling.

Hikayelerin başında okurda uyandırılan merak duygusu, sonunda “bu neydi şimdi?” diye sordurtarak, devamı hiç gelmeyecek bir dizinin ilk bölümünün bitmesi gibi bir his uyandırıyor. Dış etkilere kapalı, bağ kurulması zaten zor olan Japon kültürünün en ücra köşelerinden seçilmiş, üzerimde yankı yaratmayan bir seçmece oldu.

Although not every story in this collection merits 4 stars, several of them do. Kwaidan is a nice little collection of Japanese folktales, each one a run-in with the supernatural. Some of them I knew from other places—my studies of yokai, the movie of the same name (inspired by some of the tales in this book), and even a Hellboy comic. Still, it's fun and quick, and although it will never chill you, it may produce a smile.
The stories in this were written with strange language. They also had a lot of grammatical errors, which is obnoxious to read. Everything was phrased weirdly. I, for one, expect ghost stories to be scary, but I don't think a single story in this book was, which might have to do with the way they're written. A lot of them also have very abrupt endings. Not all of them are even Japanese stories. There's one about two Welsh boys, which doesn't at all fit with the rest of the stories.
The insect studies at the end are terrible. The butterfly and ant ones at least had one very short story each, otherwise they're just a massive chore to get through. I skimmed almost the entire ant essay, and it seemed to be about the sex lives of ants. In a Japanese ghost story book. It didn't make sense and those should not have been included.
I liked looking at the art that was included, but it would've been nice for it to match up with the stories better.
