This is one of the worst yet compelling books I have ever read. I enjoyed it but it was awful.

The main characters are ridiculous charicatures of people whilst the sci-fi elements feel like an alien was told to write science fiction. The worst part is the Stephanie Meyer brand of lolita that she slips into every book. WHY is the character at the end 17 but pretending to be 18 so that her new boyfriend doesn't feel weird.

The ending is literally the worst and I probably should have DNF'd this at page 80, I read 600 pages of almost no plot development or character development.

I don’t even know how many times I’ve read this book… such a huge comfort read for me, whenever I’m in a reading slump it’s one of the few books I will always pull out again to get me back reading.

The concept of this book is amazing, and the focus on Melanie’s and Wanderers relationship is great and really grounds the story, instead of focusing on the huge sci-fi plot elements it instead focuses on the interpersonal relationships in that setting which, for me at least, makes it so much more compelling,,,  and Wanderer is literally so fucking cracked she is incredibly strong and goes through so much in the books without compromising her sense of self and her morals

the romance is also extremely well done, the love square(?) between melanie wanda jared and ian is just a treat to read, it doesn’t feel rushed at all and the romantic elements feels like a natural extension of a book focused on the importance of human bonds, rather than something tacked on the end/forced.
Ian’s confession to Wanda when he realises she’s going to give Melanie’s body back still gets me fucked up every time I read it 💖💖💖😭

This is easily Stephanie Myers best book, however, it also has one glaring problem, and that is Stephanie Myers seemingly weird obsession with pairing hulking older men with younger weaker women.
It’s an issue that is in the Twilight books as well, but this book doesn't even have the excuse of immortal vampires/ whatever the fuck was going on with the werewolves imprinting 😭

Melanie’s and Jared’s age gap… okay… kinda weird choice but hey,, it’s the end of the world.., y’know, it shows that relationships and rules are different, sure, and jared still waits until she’s of age ig..,, okay i can turn away and accept it Melanie is always portrayed as on more or less equal footing as Jared (jared is still weirdly good at everything and is very much described as taking care of her and jamie tho but that’s sorta nit picking)

There really is no justification tho for the books ending where Wanda is put into a 17yr olds body..,.. a body constantly described as looking much younger and childlike..,.. and then LIES about her hosts age (saying she’s older) so she can be with Ian.,,,,…,,,,,.. stephanie what the fuck 😭😭😭😭 the mental gymnastics i be doing during the final chapters tryna make it readable..,,….,,, everytime wanda mentions her hosts age or describes how little and weak she is i gotta go illiterate for a second acting like i don’t see..,,,. it’s so goddamn unnecessary and weird, the “angelic” quality they wanted for a host to match wanda’s soul could easily have been described without infantilising her, there was no reason for Wanda to have to lie about the hosts age as the resolution to her romantic plot line it’s just creepy and i simply must erase those dialogue lines from my mind as soon as I read them.

Like truely stephanie get a GRIP,,, even with like kyle and jodi/sunny..,, jodi/sunny is described as being so tiny and little 🥺 in contrast to kyles hugeness —- EVEN then “miracle” family wanda sees on a raid, the man is described as much older than the women..,… like i can’t catch a break

the only exceptions to these that i can remember is Lily and Wes, where lily is much older… but that is a very background relationship and also Wes is killed like a second after they get together…. and Jared and Melanie (in the sense that Melanie is described as tall and strong) however given Stephanie’s record im pretty sure this is because there needed to be a strong contrast between Mel and Wanda, rather then stephanie not thinking the ideal relationship is big man small woman….

and it’s such a shame bc this book really does fuck so hard, the characters and writing are amazing, every description about the alien planets are fascinating, and the overall themes of human triumph and endurance are heartwarming. AND OBVIOUSLY IAN IS KING.

the only good thing about it is the age differences are so random and irrelevant that they’re easily ignored and edited in my brain lol
