I much preferred this collection of short stories to the novel I recently read by the same author. The format provided some extra variety and most of the collection was interesting.

I really enjoyed it, but some of the stories sound a bit similar and the way almost all men in these stories are depicted became tiring really quickly.

(4.5) holy crap this was amazing...i had to read this for my summer class (global women writers) which starts tomorrow and i was excited because what i’ve read and heard of adiche’s work is incredible. i’m by no means against short story collections but i typically fall in love with a few stories and feel meh about the rest, but this collection did the exact opposite. i absolutely LOVED and felt a connection to each of this stories (aside from one with wasn’t my absolute favorite) and wow. i can’t even begin to put into words how much of a genius this woman is and how important her work is to the world of literature and to society as a whole. i learned so much through this collection and i am so very excited to continue reading her work and to learn more.

Excellent collection of short stories. You can see Adichie working out some of the scenes, settings and characters that appear in her novel Americanah.

A stunning collection of short stories. Each one is vivid and emotive. It’s the first Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie I’ve read - looking forward to more.

One of the best short story collections that I’ve read!

It’s very well written but I didn’t love that all the stories were sad, traumatic or troubling. She is good at giving you a sense of Nigerian culture from all types of economical backgrounds, educations and locations. Nobody felt like a caricature. But there were no joyful or happy stories here.
