As a book on its own, this is so good! McGuire comes up with some of the funkiest ideas I've read in a while and I love it. I read Middlegame first, though, and as a follow up to that book it's a little disappointing. Definitely didn't like it as much.

McGuire knows how to write and that's the saving grace of this book. The premise is good but the execution feels like this is the first draft not the final product.
The details borrow heavily from her other books, there are many repetitions and at least one glaring error (mixing up the backstory of two characters). It's a shame because the book still reads so well. It would simply have needed a bit more time.

A slow-burn read, best read following Middlegame. Roger and Dodger are no longer the main characters - they're too busy making the rest of the universe go 'round - but they do make an appearance. Melanie and Harry play off each other well, each supporting and strengthening the other.

I do think it's slightly weird that McGuire wrote an entire other series under a pen name, then quotes it throughout.

I didn't love this as much as Middlegame, but it was still delightful. Very different than that one but just as much fun. I like seeing how these books tie into the series McGuire is writing with Avery and Zib.
