So incredible to read Angela Davis’s ideas evolve over a 15 year period. I previously read Women, Class, and Race and Are Prisons Obsolete? I think this really drives home many of the points she made in those texts and challenges you to continue developing thoughts and opinions. Especially to continue learning and listening to new ideas and perspectives. One of my favorite quotes from the book was at the very end:

“We fight the same battles over and over again. They are never won for eternity, but in the process of struggling together, in community, we learn how to glimpse new possibilities that otherwise never would have become apparent to us, and in the process we expand and enlarge our very notion of freedom.”

These essays and lectures are urgent and clear and so important. The places Davis returns to. The work of taking up again and again in order to abolish and imagine otherwise. These are a great way into Davis's ideas- they are succinct and powerful.

I was fortunate to hear Angela Davis speak in Oakland last year. She is a passionate and awe inspiring person who has stayed true to her beliefs. This book is a collection of speeches she gave between 2000 and 2010 (or thereabouts). While she covers similar ground in each speech it is articulated differently each time. Age has not diminished her fire nor her intelligence, and I would go far out of my way to hear her speak again. While I wait for that to happen, I have her words here that will continue to inspire.

Each individual speech is very powerful, but as a collection it feels very repetitive. I think I would’ve enjoyed it more had I nibbled away at it over a long period of time, rather than read it entirely in a few long sittings.
