The sequel to Front Desk picks up right where the first book left off, and it is another installment that belongs in every single library - public and school.
I think Yang does a brilliant job, almost all of the time, presenting very difficult, complex, and sometimes traumatic events, in a way that most children can likely internalize, no matter their history and experience.
This is an earnest and empowering read. I love the three central characters. They are presented lovingly and with nuance.
Sometimes the political aspect seemed a bit heavy handed, and at first I found Mia’s teacher to be almost caricature-ish. I was happy to see her develop into a more believable person.
I will be eager to continue seeing where the series goes. Important and thoughtful work.
