Libro pieno di racconti che piano piano si intrecciano intorno alla storia di una delle protagoniste, Jane, che entra nel complicato mondo delle relazioni tra uomini e donne passando dalla porta che le apre il fratello più grande, e che non contribuisce certo a renderle le cose più chiare.
Attraverso l'esprienze delle sue amiche e ovviamente delle sue, Jane apprende dell'inutilità dei libri per farsi sposare [Le regole: all'altare in poche mosse (senza passare dal letto) - un best seller anche qui] e della ricerca di logica e responsabilità personali in un mondo che sembra essere completamente privo.
La storia più lunga è quella che la vede coinvolta con un uomo più grande di lei, probabilmente la più importante della sua vita, che può aprire uno spiraglio alla comprensione di alcune coppie che ci circondano e che si rifanno alla solita vecchia dinamica padre-figlia e relative inversioni di ruolo. Scritto in modo scorrevole, con lampi di cinismo ed ironia che fanno sorridere a denti stretti è un libro corto e carino, da leggere di corsa e poi andare avanti senza rimpianti.

okay, yes, I liked this book on this re-read. the older guy was gross, but the rest of it was pretty good.
and re-reading it with adult eyes, I understand the white privilege inherent throughout the entire book. there are conflicts, yes, but they're whether Jane's brother will go back to Barnard or Columbia after dropping out and "finding himself." or whether Jane will lose this guy by dating him using "the rules" or similar manipulation tactics.
after reading stories (fiction or otherwise) about people being racially profiled and families torn apart due to mass incarceration, or struggling as an undocumented immigrant in a country that is hostile to undocumented immigrants - puts things into better perspective.
but it was entertaining, and there were some things I totally forgot I remembered from this - I learned the word "Luddite" from this book (I think I had to use an actual paperback dictionary) and I remember the line "hair is the roof of the soul."

I remember reading this book and being confused. Now all I remember about this book is being confused and feeling meh about the whole thing. I read it years ago, but I just placed it in my box to be donated to the library. Maybe somebody else will love it and give it a good home. My life is too short for meh.

Not exactly what I expected, but still enjoyed this. At first it has a light-hearted quality but it does get pretty serious and at some points I found it fairly depressing. Interesting seeing Jane at different points in life. Felt relatable even though I haven’t directly experienced most of the events she goes through.

I have read and re-read these stories in the bath so many times the pages of my copy are yellowed and wavy now. The voice in these stories is so fresh, the prose is simple, clean, so smart, and really funny. They are all perfect in their own way.
