the reason the rating is so high is because the book made me laugh out loud several times it was very funny but it wasn’t written super well and I didn’t agree with the concept of the plot

So the fact that a few stories about adoption are the only ones that ever get told seems like a problem to me.

from Family Family by Laurie Frankel
For a hilarious, joyful read, this novel’s intent is serious: to rewrite the adoption narrative. These wonderful, complicated, messy characters have made complicated and wonderful choices.

India Allwood was seven when she saw her first Broadway show. She dedicated her life to forging an acting career. Nothing was going to get in her way. Not the fact that she couldn’t sing, or wasn’t the most beautiful person around. Not love. Not a teenage pregnancy. Putting a career first meant giving up her baby and losing her true love. But she knew the adoptive parent was perfect, that she had given joy to someone who wanted to be a parent, and had given her baby a good life, and given herself the freedom to follow her dreams.

Years later, India has adopted twins and has a cult following for her television show. But there is blowback for her portrayal of a pregnant teenager in a movie made during the Covid pandemic. It threatens to end her career.

Her children, though, have set into motion a series of events that are revelatory and healing for all involved.

It’s all about family and ‘family family’, how love is not always enough, and how adoption can be joyful and positive. It’s about the challenges of parenting and growing up as an adopted child, and how a decision that can be right for a child affects the parents. It’s about love, and the limits of love, and how love sustains and never ends.

Thanks to the publisher for a free book.

3.5 I absolutely adored Laurie Frankel's One Two Three, so I was very excited when I received a copy of Family Family from NetGalley. Family fictions are often my favorite genre. The story really captured me right away and I did love so many themes throughout the book - most impactful being adoption. Unfortunately as the book went on I felt too many different stories were going on and I wasn't as invested as I was in the beginning..That being said, I am glad I kept with it and look forward to future books from Laurie Frankel.

This was a book that I at first, only picked up because of the cover. After reading it, I appreciate a bit more the fact that I picked it up in the first place. This book wasn't legendary, it wasn't anything SPECTACULAR, but I enjoyed it.
The dual timelines were interesting, although I'm a little lost as to the point of them. I'm not too sure why it was vital, although it was fun to read. I felt like I knew what the author was TRYING to say, but it didn't come through, it was as if I had to fill in the blanks FOR her in my mind because the writing was not up to par. The dual timelines felt like two separate people (I know it was with India being a teen and then an adult). India didn't feel her age when she was younger or older, I get who she is. . .kinda but not really.
My library will be carrying a copy of this book, it was good, not great, but okay.

I loved it. My only frustration was the back and forth timeline. Sometimes, it pulled me out of the story. As an adoptee, I enjoyed the portrayal of families created through adoption.
