I've been a huge fan of both Mariko Tamaki AND Yoshi Yoshitani's work for a few years now and it's been delightful to finally read their graphic novel. Yoshitani's art style lends it self to such beautifully vivid color schemes and expressive characters, which translated so well into this story. I feel like every panel was such a feast for the eyes; the artwork captures the beloved Teen Titans in such beautiful style, while also introducing us to a new cast of characters with such distinguishing and memorable characteristics for Mandy and her peers.
In terms of the story itself, I really enjoyed 80% of the story, the themes of struggling to find yourself whilst living in the shadow of someone so much bigger was written with such accuracy. Mandy's attempt to grapple with things outside of her control by rebelling in ways both big and small are so completely understandable that it was at times hard NOT to see Starfire as an antagonist. I also really loved seeing Mandy be so true to herself as a fat lesbian character, she was so unapologetically herself in every single page despite the ridicule she faced and I loved seeing that in a young adult graphic novel. ALSO! Her cockatoo is simply adorable, I loved his addition to the story.
That being said, as the story progressed to it's climax and ending, I found that the culmination/solution to Mandy's problems to be so utterly lackluster. Without spoilers, her ending felt like such a slap in the face to all the adversity she had faced, and others who would relate to her struggles. It feels like a diversion from the root of the animosity between her and her mother, a distraction from actually having to communicate and come to a mutual understanding. So all in all, even though I enjoyed the majority of this plot, the ending simply did not do it for me, and I'd recommend this book for the art style but definitely not the depth of the story.

I wish this graphic novel would've been a thing when I was younger - having a chubby alt queer MFC is EVERYTHING!! This one healed some of my inner child fr
Started because of the review bombing, finished for the cute artwork.
I have to fess up that all of my knowledge of Starfire comes from the teen titans tv show. Also when I requested this I thought it was part of that newer updated teen titans graphic novel series and was confused that the art style was so different. Then I realized that series is teen titans: raven or teen titans: beat boy, and this is a very different title. However even though this wasn't the series I was expecting it to be, I still loved it. I love Mariko Tamaki, having previously read breaking glass. This story is diverse and has some great messages in it while still being fun and full of surprises. I loved the bonus inclusion of the titans. Overall great characters that I was rooting for the entire time and a great story full of twists. I will definitely be suggesting this to patrons!

Cute cute, adorable wonderful and cute! Can't say how much I enjoy people drawing different body types in comics these days. <3
I really enjoyed this as a stand-alone graphic novel. I'm not familiar with the universe it's part of. People who have read Teen Titans (?) seem to have strong opinions about it. Your mileage may vary.
It was a brilliant quick read I picked up from my library today. If you want something bitesized and easy on the eyes this is the book. It's fascinating to me that starfire became a mother. There's not much to this book. Rebellious teen and cute art. Lost girl finds herself.
