“If you are playing a part, you will never keep it up unless you convince yourself that you are it. ”

I'm glad that The Thirty-Nine Steps is a short book, because it isn't an exciting or entertaining read.

The main character, Richard Hanney, is static and bland and his narrative is dry and emotionless. I couldn't connect with his character or understand his motives.

The premise is intriging, but the plot is boring and repetitive. The spy business is vague and dull. Things always seem to work out for the main character, so it never felt like he was in danger.

I was hoping to read a thrilling spy novel, but I'm disappointed.

Classic 110+y old spy thriller set just before World War I. It follows Richard Hannay, an ordinary man who gets caught up in an international conspiracy after a freelance spy named Scudder is murdered in his apartment. Forced to flee across the Scottish countryside while evading both the police and foreign agents, Hannay must solve Scudder’s mystery and prevent a national security disaster. He is a engineer turned
Spy due to a tragedy.

The book was nice and very fast paced. The character was likeable even with so less development and people hating this book due to less development need to see that this book is super short. It was fun and entertaining for me. First historical fiction I liked tbh. Will be reading the next in series too. I liked the Blackstone in the book alot too and was satisfied with ending. It was kinda badass

✅ Good Points:
• Fast-paced plot
• Atmospheric setting
• Resourceful protagonist
• Historical relevance
• Suspenseful chase scenes

-
With the goods the characters needed more details, there was more thrill needed and the character was going away too easily without any big consequences sometimes. But ig we can look away because this is super short book.

❌ Bad Points:
• One-dimensional characters
• Unrealistic coincidences
• Sparse character development
• Abrupt ending

-
Overall It was a nice story but keep in mind it is 110+ years old book. You should definitely read this as quick go through and I understand why people think this was boring and not much seductive to users but I liked it tbh. :)

I'm glad I read this classic and got a kick out of parts of it, but agree it shows its age. I get why it is held up as a favorite for many as such an early example of the spy genre and the person alone trying to navigate who to trust and who is out to kill him, and so forth.  But is is definitively a creature of its era.
