I really could have used without what felt like a lot of addiction/opioid shaming. I thought the subject was going to be handled with more nuance based on how it was introduced in Pete's narrative, but the MC felt very judgemental towards him. Not sure how I feel about the flow of the plot; I definitely felt uninvested at certain points, but I was mostly reeled back into it by the end.

Listened to the audio. This was an awesome story. Right from the start you hooked, and this one never lets go. This isn't some masterful piece of writing, but damn it is a lot of fun. Also, if you're a MA native, this takes place on the North Shore, and reading about towns you know is always fun!
the book only picked up its pace 60% in, before that i was ready to give it 3/5 but i kept reading bcs it kept me thinking what would i do as a mother if i were thrown into the situation? i would wanna save my child too ofc but realistically i cant afford the ransom lol but anyway. once i get to the part where they finally reveal the villain origin story, i couldnt put it down!

First book of 2022 and it did not disappoint! Wowza this was a good story! (I listened to the audiobook and I must say it was really well done!) Anyways, I finished this in two days. I couldn't stop listening! My heart was beating so hard at so many points throughout the book. Really captivating. Great pacing. Unique concept.
4 stars for part 1, 3 for part 2. I really enjoyed part 1—someone kidnaps your child and you have to kidnap another child to rescue yours—you’re part of The Chain. Part 2 wasn’t as enjoyable as Rachel vows to take down the chain.
Very interesting concept and done very well. Begs a lot of questions about how you would handle the situation if it were you.
The characters were written very well and you get a clear picture of who they are. I especially liked Rachel, she made choices I think I would have and wasn't an idiot like so many heroines seem to be written lately.
The ending is very rushed I felt and I was left wanting more information, but to avoid spoilers I'll just leave it at that.
I do recommend this book and will read more from this author.
