I’m a ball of tears! I first tried reading Better Than the Movies but couldn’t quite get into so ended up listening to the audiobook and what a great decision that was. Jesse Vilinsky’s narration was perfect. Heartfelt, hilarious, flirtatious, Vilinsky gave us everything.

I went from beaming like a school girl to crying my eyes out in the car listening to Libby prom dress shopping. I giggled and blushed and gasped. I felt young again!

Lynn Painter created a true mosaic of a character in Libby. Her heart is so full and so hurt. I want to wrap her in cotton wool to protect her from the world but I also want to spread her wings and send her off to experience EVERYTHING. She’s a beautiful, complicated young woman who makes mistakes but, ultimately, means well, loves with her whole heart, and is just so good.

Wes is one of the most emotionally mature male main character I’ve ever read about and he is 18. Make it make sense. I don’t want to say he’s unrealistic but… men like this don’t exist, right? What an angel. Knowing when to tease and when to care, when to be playful and when to be serious, can be difficult for anyone, especially those with a naturally playful personality but, for a teenager, it’s truly refreshing to read a character like Wes. I hope everyone has a Wes. I hope all the Wes’ have a Wes.

Of course, this book is a love story to romcoms and I love that. The You’ve Got Mail appreciation, in particular, was everything. If you’re a romcom lover, you’ll love this. And you’ll also want to have a movie night every day for a year so there’s that.

Still as cute as I remember it being the first time. More character development and serious topics than I thought would be mentioned.

This book was cute. Overall, I liked it. I found Liz to be annoying at times. I'm not the target audience for this book and I struggled with all the high school feels and teenage angst.

I'm not typically a fan of YA romance, but this story completely swept me off my feet! I totally binged this and read it in less than 24 hours. I also don't usually prefer enemies-to-lovers, but this one was done so well. It even has a great audiobook!

WHAT I LOVED
- the witty banter
- the grief rep
- the pop culture references
- how Liz soundtracks different moments
- WESSSSYYYYYY

WHAT I DIDN'T
- the third act break up and the fact that people choose to fight instead of just communicate the truth to each other
- small things like the presence of beer, smoking, etc. that are a part of some teens lives, so I get it... it just wasn't a part of mine. thankfully these scenes were super short-lived!

Overall, for a YA book, I would give this a solid 5 stars!

Unfortunately, this book was not for me, but I'm rating it slightly higher than I would otherwise because the references to all my favorite rom-coms was such catnip for me. That and the authentic portrayal of grief were the real bright spots of this book. On the other hand, I felt the characterizations were flat, with no real evidence for traits that were claimed but never shown.
For example, nearing the end of the book, Liz tells Joss that she didn't tell her the truth because Joss is "judgmental," despite no examples of this in the prior 80% of the book. Bothersome.
The plot and particular plot points were also eerily similar to The Duff. I've only seen the movie adaptation, not read the book, but I was distracted the whole way through by similarities that I didn't feel comfortable just ascribing to the genre as a whole ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This book is honestly such a fun one!

Liz is very relatable, at least to me and Wes Bennett!!

Enemies to lovers - it's our trope, Buxbaum

Wes is perfect.

But otherwise, I read this in about 2 days during the summer and it just felt like such a girly pop book.. does make any sense? Also the cover is so PrEttYyy!! Definitely recommend this for a fun romance :D
