This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

High level: A book on cancel culture and shame, very accessible.

I'd rate it a 5 on exploring the complex emotions of shame and how we (society both on and offline) inflict it. The book didn't go where I thought it would and really explores the nuances in shame as a punishment in formal (legal cases) and informal (online) settings - interviewing people who are both the perpetrator (victim of shame?) and the judge.

But then I'd rate it a 3 on the "off the paved path" tracks the book takes. Sometimes Ronson goes off his main message and I think we're going somewhere interesting, and then it turns out the end of the road is not at all related to the original idea or theme and I'm like, how did I end up here?

Listened to the entire audiobook on a 9 hour car trip. I loved the narration and the subject matter really made me question my own motives and wants when I've participated in public shamings on Twitter and Facebook. This book is getting 5 stars because I think it has actually made me change my viewpoint on certain aspects of social media, and due to this my behavior will most likely change. Anytime a book changes me as a person and causes a change in my behavior, then I believe it deserves 5 stars.

I hope the author writes a book on more modern public shaming and especially cancel culture. This book is set from 2008 to 2015, and public shamings have gotten more frequent and brutal, especially when it comes to canceling people.

I'm definitely interested in whatever else this man writes.
