...did I miss something? The entire time I was reading I was confused as to WHY Cole so desperately wants to get to South Africa. Sure, it’s her home, but won’t Miles just immediately get placed in another government man compound the second he gets there?? Or will he be hidden away until some time in the far-off future when it’s safe for men to live freely?? Beukes never goes into that and it kind of ruined it for me. There are too many holes like this in the story, and it was disappointing that we didn’t get a better look at what the new American society looks like. It seems apocalyptic yet also there’s a thriving night life and people are still shopping and living their lives?? I AM CONFUSED. The best part about this book, and the reason I’m giving it 3 stars, is the incredible writing, particularly during the parts told from Billie’s POV. Although she is a truly damaged and infuriating narcissist, Billie’s sections are the best parts.

I didn’t love this but I didn’t hate this. For a dystopian novel I expected more action, it really felt as if things happened mostly off screen. While this shows some important issues when talking about such a binary pandemic, there needs to be more thought brought in on how different communities are effected. Specifically the Trans community. There was never mention of a trans person until the end of this book and the context is very strange.

I’m usually a total sucker for dystopian/speculative fiction, but this was ehh for me. Reading a book about a pandemic during a pandemic bumped it up from 2 stars to 3 because *~relatable~*, I guess.
