Every person who has ever voted in America should read this book. Challenging read but written very well

This was an incredibly informative and incredibly upsetting read. the overall tone was a lot more formal than I was anticipating at first, I thought there would be more anecdotal/personal stories, but I'm glad it was actually a bit more clinical in the end. It was a lot easier to track how the ideals that exist now have evolved and expanded over the course of decades and how systemic it all is. Overall a very informative and important read, but also like a real bummer.

Incredibly informative and impeccably researched. If you want to understand what evangelicals really are and how the community got to where they are now and why they’ve had their outsized impact on the US government, this is it. You will leave this book understanding that and also probably depressed and anxious. The definition of “thanks, I hate it.”

It's hard to say that I "really like" this book or think it's "amazing." I can't describe how many times it made me angry, like when pastors or other authority figures were given passes when they accused of sexual or child abuse. People just chalked it up to their god-given "masculinity." This book is not snarky or humorous despite the impression the title might give. It's a cultural foray into white evangelicalism in the US.

I did not like the narrator. She sounded robotic, bored, and dispassionate.

A sobering account of the history of evangelicalism. I have a lot of thoughts, too many for a short review.

If you are an evangelical or are confused about evangelical stances, please take the time to read this. It will open your eyes.

It is critical against evangelicalism, and the title is overly provocative. If you are an evangelical, you've already been exposed to the evangelical bias; get a different point of view and read this. To skeptics of what she has to say, read this with an open mind, a heart seeking truth and Jesus, and maybe you'll understand why many are deconstructing and moving away from evangelical denominations.

This is a very important look into the history of white evangelical America and how it has led us to where we are today with American politics. Highly recommend this book. I just wish this book would have dived deeper into how these shifting perspectives within the evangelical church affected marginalized groups. Or if we had gotten more perspectives from people who had left evangelicalism and why they left. What are their critiques?
