This is probably the most simplistic of his works, and I think that's the strength of this story. Trisha is a pretty relatable character and just takes off in the woods when her family annoyes her, but she gets this anxiety that grows as she gets deeper and gets more lost. On the whole I liked this book and I appreciated how focused it was. It's a nice way to spend an afternoon if you want a less convoluted story.

I was SO worried about re-reading this book since I had already read it and it terrified me, but would it still scare me on a re-read?
It did.
Even when reading this book in my bedroom, with my husband reading his book next to me, I still got that deep stomach fear that I had when I was 17, in my parent's house, in my bedroom, terrified to go to the bathroom.
I love Trisha. I love the monster and if it actually exists or if it's Trisha's mental/physical state that made it up (I think it's real but that's just my opinion). I love the fear that King creates in me in just 200 pages. It's fantastic!

It's like Hatchet all grown up. It captures the terror and hope and real threats and consequences of being lost and alone in the wilderness. It's not a horror novel like so much of King's work but instead a psychological thriller. I couldn't put it down.

Stephen King sure is a compelling writer.

I listened on audiobook; it took me a very long time to get interested and I repeatedly wanted to give up. I think it would have been a better read.
