This book is brilliant. A fantastic portal story with an unlikely set of hero’s. I couldn’t put it down and I have already recommended it to my class to read. A brilliant book with amazing illustrations

EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING corresponds almost perfectly to the idea I have of a Youth Fantasy book, where the Imagination reigns supreme. I really got quickly into the story and what I immediately appreciated was the length of the chapters. They are very short, around 4 pages each and it is perfect to keep the pace. It is especially very satisfying, I can not explain it correctly but the shorter the chapters, the more one has the impression of moving much faster, or on the contrary that the book has no end. But in this case, it doesn’t matter!

The universe is amazing, the pages are almost all illustrated in orange-black color, allowing to visualize the environments and to get completely into the novel. All in explosions of colors, the graphic style is particular but corresponds to the story, I loved the drawings! It’s full of action, reversals, the end is great, I didn’t expect at all the last cliffhanger (knowing that there are several!!).

Conclusion: I think it will be a great pleasure to reread this novel as it has managed to transport me and to amaze my child soul remained intact. A reading for all ages, without any moderation.

Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City by Rob Biddulph

This is a magical, exciting new adventure series for readers aged 8/9+ from the amazing picture book illustrator Rob Biddulph (Draw with Rob)
In the story Peanut Jones is desperately missing her dad who mysteriously vanished and she is hating life at her new school.
Peanut loves drawing though and by chance she accidentally uncovers a magical pencil where the things she draws come to life. It is from here that the adventure begins.

Peanut's amazing pencil draws her into an exciting but dangerous new world. Can Peanut, with the help of her friend Rockwell and her little sister find out what happened to her dad?

I loved this heart warming story I was immediately drawn in (no pun intended!) to Peanut's life, trying to manage without her dad. I loved all the details of the story which really capture the bond between Peanut and her dad like the little pictures that her dad used to leave in her lunch box every day.

The story is also extremely creative and I loved the Illustrated City which was brought to life through the fantastic pictures. As you would expect there are stunning illustrations throughout which make it such a fun book to read. The links to real life artists was also fab (and there is even a glossary at the end of the book with more information.)

I cannot wait to share this with my daughter in a year or so. I know she is going to love it as much as I did. I will definitely be purchasing book two of the trilogy when it is published next year.

This is a highly-imaginative tale by award-winning author and illustrator Rob Biddulph, who has dreamt up a world where the main character literally illustrates her way through her adventure.

Peanut Jones is unhappy at the
St Hubert’s School for the Seriously Scientific and Terminally Mathematic:

“Frivolous creativity has no place at St Hubert’s. No place at all.”

She’s just served detention for drawing a fire-breathing vampire unicorn in her physics book, and just about had it.

Back home, her father has gone missing, and her mother seems to be cozying up to her smarmy boss.

From the stuff that her father left behind for her, Peanut discovers a pencil. A pencil, which produces “living, breathing drawings” — including a door she draws which becomes a portal to Chroma, the illustrated city.

Chroma is in peril because Mayor White is threatening to wipe out all its colour. Peanut and her friend Rockwell, and baby sister Little Bit go on quite the adventure, with Peanut drawing everything they need along the way. They ride on an alligator, hang glide down a cliff, and swim in a rainbow lake. Art and creativity are at stake, and the weapons they’ll need for this fight.

Such good fun! Book 1 ends on a cliffhanger, and book 2 continues to reference real artists from our world — this time, famous artwork is suddenly crumbling to dust 😮

Our 7-9ers will appreciate this densely-illustrated adventure, especially young artist-readers 😉 but 9-12s will enjoy this on a deeper level too ❤️

An absolutely lush story. Peanut is adorable. I loved her determination, her creativity and her budding friendship with Rockwell as they adventure around the Illustrated City. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.
