3.7 AVERAGE

A nice little companion to Reservoir 13 but by being broken up into chapters each focussing on one character it lacks the magic that was spun by the seasonal rhythms of Reservoir 13.

Jon McGregor has a talent for writing about the little things, the everyday, unremarkable, and using these to weave a much wider, bigger story.

I found myself pleased to be back in this unnamed Peak village and learning more about the lives of these characters but not as swept up in the world as I was on my first visit.

Not going to rate this because I had no idea it was technically a prequel
dark mysterious tense fast-paced

Have to say, I'm glad that I read this in the wrong order. I bet it makes the first book, Reservoir 13, that much more interesting, with this aspect in my head as I read it. I am looking forward to that experience, because this experience was so enjoyable.
medium-paced

Not as good as Reservoir 13, but on the other hand, a really good companion to Reservoir 13. But don't read Tapes first. It won't make sense without having read 13.

An interesting follow up to the first book but I still need answers!

3.5

As amazing as Reservoir 13, makes you want to read it all over again, and again.

I believe this book is a companion to one of the author's other works, Reservoir 13, which I haven't read. On its own, I just don't think it's my type of book. It's told in short vignettes about characters that live around a small village. Some were interesting, but I found it overall to be a bit boring. The overarching story never gets resolved, or maybe I was just confused.

I absolutely love the cover though.
