“How, then, does one become an activist?
The easy answer would be to say that we do not become activists; we simply forget that we are. We are all born with compassion, generosity, and love for others inside us. We are all moved by injustice and discrimination. We are all, inside, concerned human beings. We all want to give more than to receive. We all want to live in a world where solidarity and companionship are more important values than individualism and selfishness. We all want to share beautiful things; experience joy, laughter, love; and experiment, together.”
"It is better to die with dignity than to be slowly strangled by the torturer."

When reading the parts about Gaza, I felt the blood rushing out of my head, and had difficulty breathing properly. The world finds it easy to forget the consistent atrocities imposed by isr*el on Palestinians, and I haven't been keeping up with the news as I usually did, and it severely upset me to read everything that's happened in 2006, 2008, and 2014 once again.
I was conflicted at first when reading the book, as I couldn't always tell where the authors stood, but near the end, things started to get clearer.
This is a good book to add to readings on Palestine (shouldn't be the only book to read about the subject though). For someone who doesn't know about Gaza, this could be an educational read.

"...past injustices cannot all be undone, this is very clear to the people who have been branded as unrealistic even by their friends. Not all past evils can be rectified, but ongoing evils surely should stop..."
"If this is the departure point, there will never be any reconciliation. 'I invaded your house, but I am generous enough to let you come back and take the sofa with you to the new place.' That is hardly a dialogue that wants to settle a conflict. It is almost more humiliating than the act of invasion itself."

Illan's insistence on adopting a vocabulary that reflects the true nature of Israel's actions is refreshing and seems to have gained much ground since the release of this book. Although, "ethnic cleansing" has been rightly replaced with "genocide" in people's vocabulary.
I would've liked to have read accounts from Palestinians in a book titled "On Palestine."
