Another great choice for young readers from Mo Willems - this book looks at how Elephant and Piggie must adjust their expectations when weather changes their plans, and also, as per usual, has a nice message about friendship.
Another Elephant and Piggie book. Just as fun, pictures are just as great, also a good early reader book. Though my 20-mo-old son didn't quite grasp the comedy, he really liked the worms :)
The font is always horrible. But otherwise these books are uneven. And when they get it right like this one, it is cute and funny. And kind of surprising. What a good pair of friends. This one makes good use of a range of fairly simple art. And I like both Piggie and Elephant more by the end. And the worms.
I LOVE Mo Willems and his wonderful picture books and I think it's sad that they're not more widely read in the UK as kids respond very well to his crazy off-the-wall humour. The illustrations are basic but manage to portray so much emotion and the dialogue is very easy to read but really needs to be read with expression in order for the story to make sense. In this way Willems writes the perfect books for helping those children who can sound a bit mono-tone when they first start reading. The books aren't a challenge to read in terms of the text but they just beg to be read with expression and passion in your voice and the emotional cues are implicit in the illustrations. The Elephant and Piggie series are particularly useful for using with KS1 readers as they are published in a thicker, narrower format than your usual picture book so appear to be more of a bound style comic than a picture book even though they are short. Elephant and Piggie are as amusing as ever in this book, Piggie is full of enthusiasm for playing outside but then disaster strikes and it begins to pour with rain. What will the friends do?
I really like the way the rain was drawn in this one. Clever.

I like that Gerald gets to be the friend this time - it seems like it's usually Piggie!
