A friend gave Jonah an Elephant & Piggie book for his third birthday, and I only just now (a whole year later) thought to take a couple others out of the library. Am thrilled to report that we have loved these as much as our first!
Elephant and Piggie strike again in this wonderful tale that Neo thoroughly enjoyed reading alongside me. With the sun shining, Gerald and Piggie venture outside to play. However, soon the sun disappears and the rain comes down, first a trickle but soon a downpour. Soaked and less than impressed, Piggie announces that she’s no longer keen on playing outside. Gerald comes to the rescue as they bemoan Mother Nature’s intervention of their play time. It is only after watching others enjoy the rain that Gerald and Piggie see that the rain can be fun. Mother Nature no longer controls their happiness or playtime, rain or shine! Neo and I sped through this book, reading as the clouds pushed across the sky and the rain began to fall. Funny, he looked out and wondered if we might play in the rain. Talk about a book having a lasting impression on young minds.
Piggy and Gerald want to play outside when it starts to rain; although it first puts a damper on their spirits they learn that it too can be fun. The illustrations are in cartoon style and are pretty basic such as the characters in color on a white page and then of course the rain. Although not terribly complex the illustrations still reflect emotion and action very well. The text is in speech balloons and size varies depending on emotions of the characters. For kids, there could be discussion or a craft about what they like to do when it rains or shines.
Don't give this to your children when it is raining unless you are prepared to handle wet and mess.
