excellent! I adore this play - a wonderful relic of queer theatre history, and impressively written to avoid suspicion while still delivering to a modern audience. I’ll stop here to avoid spoilers, but a truly amazing play to read!

I kind of wish I had read this at a time (either in world history or my life) when it would have scandalized me.

I've seen the film version of this (which Coward hated on principle), which borrows the premise but not much else, but I've never seen the play staged. It may be a case of reading Coward needing to see the actors and staging, but I actually didn't care for this that much. There was a lot of stuff about Women: Why Are They Like That!? and not really any more implied homosexuality than the film. Some of the one-liners and bits of banter were quite funny, but not as funny as I was expecting. I liked the characters trying to conceptualise and rationalise their desires on the fly, but that too often felt a little cautious. I didn't feel like I really got a handle on any of the characters, though, which again is probably the fault of reading a script rather than seeing the play performed, but I admit to being disappointed.

It must have been a hell of a bombshell at the time, though. Man.
