dark emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

As someone who still has never made it through “Interview With a Vampire” despite numerous attempts, I’m not sure why I even tried this but I’m glad I did.  Yes, it’s overwrought; it’s gothic and dark and soapy and weird.  I found it entertaining.

I think the last 40 pages is where there is really a story. The rest of the book is just a narrative of wispy incest.

Anne Rice was anti fan fiction because she knew she’d taken it far enough.

I was really disappointed in this book. I love detail in novels, but this got to be ridiculous. It was very repetitive when it got to the file on the family history. There wasn't too much going on plot wise until the very end of the book. There are 54 chapters and for me it didn't get interesting until chapter 51. I understand that this is the beginning novel for a new series, so a lot of detail should be expected, but that was ridiculous.

giving this a perfect 3 because i have no idea how to rate this fucking book

this book haunted me for months much like a family ghost that has served the women of my family for centuries with an alternately seductive and disturbing appeal, but is mostly just sort of lingering ambiently not really doing anything but annoy me

any review will warn you at least half of this 1000+ page book is dry ass Talamasca files. and then there’s some weird shit and some gross shit and some interesting shit and some bewildering shit and its mostly extremely gradual building tension and foreshadowing dripping from the ceiling. and then basically every content warning you can imagine happening in a period of like 100 pages and a kind of horrific haunting slightly beautiful conclusion. anyway this book was insane read at your own risk and content warnings on so many levels but the main ones being incest, rape, cnc, racism, gore. also going from vampire chronicles sex rules (AKA vampires can’t have sex because they all have ED) to this did give me some severe whiplash. on some level i really enjoyed the slow build of everything and the kind of audacity of the pacing being as all over the place as it was. on another level i had to read many awful things with my own gay eyes. have fun be traumatized
