Superb storytelling! So much detail and intricate characters. Amazing.

I was really torn between 3 and 4 stars, but thinking about what I didn't like (the sex scenes, the very long though interesting explanation of the whole Mayfair family, both protagonists for some things) this is a 3 out of 5 for me. Lasher is worth 4 out of 5 though, I really like this character.

I first read this decades ago. I've been wanting to reread it since Anne Rice's death. It is one of my favorites of hers.

Loved, loved, loved this book. Read it in a day.

Ugh. This was sooooo unnecessarily long. I clocked it. The Mayfair family history took up almost 500 pages of this 1000+ page book. I get adding depth. I get adding context. I do not get hearing about literally every branch and every family member (cousins, second cousins, non-witchy family members) since the origin of the family way back in the 1600s. The (over) use of the word quadroon, the incest, the weird pedophilia (Michael talking about Rowan’s child like, virginal mouth), the “rape me” from Rowan as she consummates her relationship with Lasher. I am NOT a prude (I read a lot of trigger heavy spicy romance…including Rice’s Beauty series), but there are were some really weird moments in this book that felt like it was put in for no purpose. I don’t really know how to rate this. I know it’s beloved by many and I must be missing something but I found this weird and tedious and with zero redeeming characters. I was particularly annoyed by Michael, who spent much of the book focused only on houses and sex with Rowan. Oh, and also mooning over Rowan like he was a 12 year old boy in his first puppy love relationship.

I don’t know. I’ll probably try the next book, since it’s a normal length and not so much history of the Mayfair family.

Purtroppo, l'ho abbandonato.
Not my cup of tea.

Re-read review- I forgot how unlikeable Rowan is. The best parts of this book are the history/flashbacks but otherwise, it doesn't age well.
