There's having "unlikeable" characters and unlikeable characters. Mila supposedly falls in the first category (although I found her quite likeable). Most of the other characters, though? Kinda falling in the second category. I didn't really get any sense of real redemption from June or Dayton or even real acknowledgment that they were bitchy Mean Girls and bullies. Caleb is still kind of a borderline incel
and his relationship with June absolutely doesn't absolve him of his dickishness
. And none of the adults were particularly helpful or even understood how to let Mila grieve properly.
Toby, in particular, was all about being supportive until Mila tried to confide in her and then without even talking about why Mila's plan was a bad idea, she went all crazy militant. Showing up with guns instead of trying to have a real conversation with Mila? Come on.

This book had a lot of potential to be more than what it was. It could have been a bigger discussion about grief or racial issues or bullying. Instead, it winds up barely scratching the surface and feels too neatly wrapped up and too superficial for me.

Fun, if a little too teen-angsty for me. An interesting take on the zombie tale. The twists were not that twisty as I thought they were obvious, but the narrative was good and the characters fleshed out (heh) well enough to give the story life.

This started so slowly that I almost let the library loan run out. But it was available for renewal, so I kept going and I’m glad I did. It wasn’t too hard to figure out who the murderer was, but there were some other surprises in the story that made it well worthwhile, and the ending is great.

So yeah the actual mystery got a little lost along the way. Honestly I don’t think I would have liked it as much if it hadn’t. I really ended up enjoying the girls bonding and having fun because, yeah, sometimes I just want an audiobook I can listen to while I crochet and not have to be paying super close attention to in order to understand what’s going on. I saw the twist coming and I actually was really hoping for it the whole time bc I find it funny.

This one is very entertaining. I loved the witchy vibes. It definitely is heartbreaking in participating in the main character Mila  devastation navigating the loss of Riley. I really felt the grief of this story, and all of the fast and slow ways we let go.
I can’t quite put a finger on why, but I didn’t love the final twist of who the murderer turned out to be. Aside from that I loved the dynamic of the girls. I love the way the story unfolded. I enjoyed the Cross Creek coven.
All in all I think this is a great read, and I appreciate that it is YA creating a space for teens to explore their own relationship with death, sadness, ptsd, and all of the other deeper issues explored in this novel.
Also… teenage girl zombies are awesome 😎 🖤🖤🖤

Hex-cellent

I truly enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting, which is a feat accomplished by few (thanks adhd) and also would not mind a sequel involving Mila & Toby & whomever else wants to come along.

Really enjoy this book - I feel like I usually see twists coming and I didn't. It ended up making the character growth and the bittersweet ending that much better.
