Loved reading about Margaret Pole, but a slow burner
Reading this series makes me quite glad I was not a woman of this era, and makes me dislike Henry VIII all the more.
Great story about quite the woman. Her death was a shocking example of how mad and depraved Henry had become.

Gregory does it again. The suspense is thrilling, the history rings true, and characters are absolutely full of flavor.
Thanks Philippa!

The figure of Margaret Pole is not well known, this novel tells us, through her, how we lived in the Tudor court. Anguish, terror, the sense of precariousness deriving from the madness of the kings, Henry VII and VIII. Sterile usurpers who hate fertile Plantagenets and condemn to death for no real reason, if not blood and bloodline, even innocent children and elderly women like Margaret herself.
I like Margaret's realism which allows her to survive the death of her brother, of the queen she loved so much, of getting away from the princess she considered her daughter. Her realism makes her human, she wants to live, only life matters. Gregory is capable of giving life to extraordinary female characters and she never tires.

The beginning of this book was very slow and quite boring. It picked up mid-way. It's the story of Margaret Poe, whom in history was the daughter of Isabel Neville, Duchess of Clarence and George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, and cousin to the Queen Elizabeth of York. Although the book is fictional, there is quite a lot of history involved. Following Margaret while she is one of Catherine of Aragon's ladies in waiting. It was an interesting take on history, and I am happy that I have that I have read all 6 books in The Cousins' War series.
Another winner from Philippa Gregory. I love historical fiction and this didn't disappoint.
I'm a big fan of Philippa Gregory. As usual, this book was written very well and the plot always moved along. My only complaint is that this one just dragged on a bit. But it was a great read, and definitely recommended for fans of this genre.
