8/10 Stars. Great book on Margaret De La Pole, cousin to Henry VIII. She was a true noblewoman and unfailingly loyal to Katharine of Aragon and Princess Mary. Unfortunately Henry's descent into madness led to her unjust execution in 1541. All in all, the Cousin's War series is an excellent read.

Review - I was actually pleasantly surprised by this one of Gregory's books. Sometimes she really hits the mark, and sometimes she completely misses. I particularly loved the first half of this book, where Margaret Pole and Elizabeth of York are together, and then the early part with Katherine of Aragon. I thought it was very clever for Gregory to explore what motivated Margaret, and how much the execution of her father and brother might have had on her opinions and later actions. This version of events seems plausible, though we won't ever know the truth from 500 years ago.

I would like to explain my high rating for this book. I thought "The White Queen", "The Lady of the Rivers" and "The White Princess" (other books in the Cousins' War series) were better written books with more interesting protagonists. However, I found this book provided me with a new level and depth of understanding into Henry VIII's reign and the brutality with which he governed his people.

I have done a good deal of research on Henry although primarily on the earlier part of his reign and have never really understand why he was depicted as tyrant. Henry's changing personality as seen through the eyes of Margaret Pole in this narrative was truly fascinating.

To any one interested in the Tudors I would urge you to read Gregory's Author's Note at the end of the novel which are both poignant and fascinating.
medium-paced

Philippa Gregory never disappoints. I worried I’d lose interest as it was almost 600 pages but I was completely engaged. I got to visit the Tower this last summer and it gave me a whole new appreciation for British history.
