Perhaps the most deeply tragic book I’ve ever read, A Little Life is a beautifully written heartbreaker. The abuse and violence relentlessly endured by the protagonist, Jude, is so unimaginable that at moments it seems egregious, salacious even, and almost distracting. The beauty and perseverance of deep and meaningful friendship, however, kept  me coming back for more. The depth and dimension of Yanagihara’s characters is profound but I did find myself asking she wrote this book.  I love that she is unapologetic about her novels but I still don’t have an answer to my question. The story would’ve been just as moving with only half the atrocities. I will definitely read more of her work.

It took me so long to read this because of its reputation of being devastatingly sad and yuuUuup it was definitely that. but it was also really beautiful

This book was just so awful and the reading experience incredibly draining. If you are looking to read A Little Life, which I personally would not recommend, I would strongly urge people to thoroughly explore the trigger warnings before picking up this book. While reading the book I became aware of some of the authors comments about mental health and therapy which I found extremely unsettling. It seemed some plot points were for the sake of being shocking or like they were intended to be seriously triggering. This book will stay with me for a long time and I’m certain I’ll never pick it up again

O recomand? Da!
Mi-a plăcut? Nu!

Not a book I could recommend when people asked as it is full of every trauma you could ever imagine.  My heart breaks for all the characters throughout and I had to put it down towards the end (those who have read it will know the point I am talking about) to steel myself emotionally to finish.  However, it is the most comprehensive and deep character development I have ever read in a book and truly describes what it is to love and have lost,  and what I can only imagine it is like to live with such deep trauma.

Not a fan of trauma for traumas sake as so many brand this genre and books like ‘My Year Of Rest And Relaxation’, but this does not compare as it has a deeper level of truth, of a real life.

A true masterpiece of what to live a life is like, and the emotions, contradictions, and trauma which can come with it.  A book, although painful, I will read many times more, and that is saying something from someone who does not reread books often if at all.
