i wish the narrative voice(s) in this were as strong as offred in the handmaid’s tale, nevertheless atwood has created, in my opinion, one of the most fascinating literary characters i’ve ever read and i couldn’t put it down.
Between this and the American Dirt fiasco, I am beginning to lose faith in publishers. Do not push mediocrity upon me when my time is so precious.
I had to restart this book 50 pages in because I thought I had missed something. Why is this considered one of the best books of 2019? I know for a fact it was not the best the year had to offer. But there it was in the conversation on every website, working off the prestige of its predecessor when it brought no merit of its own.
In the [b:The Handmaid's Tale|38447|The Handmaid's Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1)|Margaret Atwood|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1578028274l/38447._SY75_.jpg|1119185] universe, this adds nothing. You get to see what happens to characters (Aunt Lydia SZN), sure, but the world stays stagnant, void of tension and too "neat" for my taste.
This is a book where everything goes as planned and conflicts are easily flicked away to the point that you wonder if there was any threat to begin with. It was too predictable to the point that I was actually getting angry. So little actually happened to the point that I do not want to waste my time getting into specifics here.
I have not seen live-action Hulu adaptation, but I hope that they avoid this book's plot altogether.

Excellent follow up to the Handmaids Tale.
I had been putting off starting this book for years because I loved The Handmaid's Tale so much and was worried the sequel wouldn't live up to it. I'm really glad I finally decided to pick it up. While The Handmaid's Tale stands strong on its own and a sequel didn’t feel necessary, this book still ties everything together in a satisfying way. It has the same chilling vibe as the first one, and I couldn’t put it down – it was a total page-turner.
