Too precious in general and too glorifying of the men in heterosexual sex. Yuck.
I don't remember when exactly I read this book for the first time - I have read it twice so far. It is the type of book you hate to finish (or rather I hate to finish), because it means you have to leave the characters behind.

Beautiful writing and memorable characters
This is such a smart book but yet it still has lots of juicy parts... Perfect summer read if you don't want to settle for brain dead chick lit...
Ms. Kingsolver has a beautiful way with words, weaving them together with the skill of Arachne and spellbinding the reader.
This book was really hard to get into. It weaves the stories of three main characters, and the only one I found myself liking was Lusa, the young widow. I did like the "feel" of the setting (summer on farms and on a mountain located in Appalachia), but overall the book didn't seem to have a real story or purpose.

Rich, lush storytelling. Another of my very favorites. It's almost as good as eating chocolate cake.
I believe the reason I didn't read this book until now is that I didn't like the cover. But that was a mistake. I really enjoyed all of the storylines and the portraits of people that showed both their virtues and their flaws. The science that came across in the varied expertise of characters was interesting and it shed light on their personalities. What I found most interesting, as well as convincing and admirable, was the way in which characters formed (or depended on) relationships with people whose beliefs or personalities were so different from their own. I guess that particularly resonated in this election/post-election time.
