You know a book is good when your only criticisms are "why isn't this longer?" and "where can I read the sequel?". I want to live in this world of Zebulon County that Kingsolver has created. I want to know everything and more about the lives of Deanna and Eddie Bondo and Lusa and Little Rickie and Nannie Rawley and yes, even Garnett Walker. I want to know about Crys going to her high school dances in a tuxedo. I suppose I'll just have to content myself by reading more of Kingsolver's books and falling in love with more of her characters.

4.5 stars. I loved so much about this book, the characters, the setting, her descriptions of the natural world, but had to round down for the parts where Kingsolver can’t help herself from veering into being pedantic and borderline condescending, traits that ultimately turned me off from her later books completely.

Absolutely loved this book! So rich in themes and characters and details. Plus I felt like I learned something in every chapter about farming and birds and wildlife and bugs. I didn't want it to end.

I read this a while ago. No idea why I did not record it here.

I can't resist Kingsolver, even when I know it's going to be a long read. This wasn't my favorite, but it was still good. I learned some new science!

Nice story but nothing special. it was actually three stories only linked very superficially. I wasn't terribly impressed.

I love Barbara Kingsolver and I loved the themes of this book but.... it's essentially three women womenxplaining for 300 pages.
