It’s been a while since I last read a Lisa Jewell book but I’m slowly making my way through her backlog, in anticipation of the newest release: None of This is True.

Saffyre Maddox was ten when something truly unspeakable happened to her and she’s carried it with her ever since. The man assigned to heal her, failed her and now she watches and learns all there is to know about him. Similarly, Owen Pick hides in the shadows but for different reasons. He’s never been seen or cared for. When Saffyre goes missing, Owen is brought into the spotlight and not for good reasons. Everyone is watching him and accusing him of being responsible.

I really enjoyed the split perspectives and I think they complement thrillers very well. It’s frustrating but so rewarding being drip-fed information until it slowly comes together and leaves you wondering how you didn’t see it sooner. There were some points where I was confused but I let the story lead me and eventually, I saw how it all tied together. As with any Lisa Jewell book, once it picked up, it was impossible to put down and I just needed to desperately know how these characters and puzzle pieces fit together.

I will say that this particular book covers some very triggering topics and to be aware if you’re planning on reading this. At the same time, Lisa deals with it appropriately and sensitively and it never feels out of place.

I’m always a fan of Jewell. She writes mysteries that are more just… suspenseful. I kept trying to guess what had happened and I needed to know. But this one also dealt with a lot
of sexual assault. Not necessarily super graphic. But very much a main part of the plot.

This book didn’t hook me until the very last chapter of the after section. I’m not sure exactly why it didn’t hook me, it just didn’t. It was a decent storyline though. I was also not really happy with the “plot twist” Like it was kinda dull

Very slow pace initially which I quite liked because it built a net of different stories and missed or fleeting connections. I really liked how it developed each individual characters stories and slowly associated how they connected with each other.
The ending however was a little disappointing - I felt that everything solved too fast in the last final chapters

From before halfway through I started thibking that Roan was going to turn up to be the slimey guy, while Owen would be innocent - I really appreciated it the building of them towards the way that they are perceived from the world, and the little snippets on how they are actually like - like Rowan and his standing too close to women etc.

I am not sure how I feel about the "actual" villain - I guess it makes sense but that turn of events felt maybe a little rushed compared to the careful building of the rest of the plot. I also liked Owen's character development.
I felt that in a lot of his descriptions he came across as Neurodivergent - his peculiarity with food, not really understanding social conventions or people's motives and intentions, his general struggle to fit in society despite looking like he should. I don't know if that was intentional or just accidental, but I did feel it fit with the character.

All in all a pleasant book - I had the audio book and felt it was read really well, the voices provided good characterization.
