I can't tell you how long it's been since I've read a Bentley Little book. I'm guessing maybe 3 or 4 years. Now I remember why. This book seemed familiar. No I haven't read it before, but I've read several other stories very similar to this one. This was unique in the way it was a bank instead of a store or whatnot, but knowing overall the basic plot took some of the fun out of this book. After I started it, I almost put it down but the narrator was so great that I finished it anyways.

wasn't expecting a quiet indictment of the banking industry, economic monopolies, and trump's america when i picked this up but i can't say i'm mad about it

I had added this book to my TBR because I read somewhere that Stephen King liked it. I'm not sure if I find that surprising or fitting: The Bank is basically Needful Things, 30 years later. If I were King, I might frown at the obvious overlap, but it didn't seem to bother him. He even added a blurb.

Needful Things is MUCH better. It's not even close.

The Bank is a tedious story, with themes repeated, characters that are unrealistically not smart, and an unsatisfying ending. I'm not sure what Bentley Little was thinking when he wrote this book. In fact, I'm not sure he was thinking at all. It's just... not good.

I've read a lot of Bentley little with most books being a rehash of the store. I gave up on them as they seemed to get progressively worse - shoddy plot, copy/paste characters, same bad guys with a different name. My previous ranking of good ones from little were:

The store, the association, the consultant.

I would say that the bank is better than the consultant, not as good as the store or the association. Hopefully that ranking might help someone? Lmao

I had fun with this but it's a little muddled. I was never quite sure what the bank wanted or what it was doing exactly. It seemed to make folks worse versions of themselves but it wasn't clear and there were a couple of instances that were just weird. The ending too was a bit wonky. But the prose is solid and the audio was great. Felt like a grown up Goosebumps almost. Very straightforward and ordered and would probably make a fun movie. Looking forward to reading more from Little.

This was my first time reading anything by Bentley Little. I believe I may just have to try another. I enjoyed this book. There were parts of the story that reminded me a bit of the story Needful Things.

If you enjoyed The Store, The Association, or The Policy, you'll like this one, too.
