A very thought-provoking and beautiful book. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I would give this a 3.75. The story was strong, I learned alot, but it some how lacked that page turner appeal for me. It was interesting to learn the location where the story took place was a real location and was turned into an Afro American University. I would recommend this book.
Expected a YA novel (since I got it from my sister) but it covered more mature topics. Not sure it could have been done any other way. Enjoyable, quick read. Yet heartbreaking in moments. I'll be thinking of this one for a while
The leader of our Zora Neale Hurston Reading Circle said she thought she knew everything there was to know about slavery, but the story in this book was new to her. This is a heartbreaking story of southern female slaves brought by their masters to a resort in Ohio for a summer vacation. At times the women are treated as mistresses only to be cruelly put back in their place at the whim of their masters. Another sad part of our American history.
I loved this book. I hated this book. But, mostly I loved this book. It is filled with heartbreak, strength, and power. There were times where I was physically nauseated reading some scenes... and I had to put it down. Overall, I loved the story of relationship between the women... how they saw each other through. I do wish I could've gotten to know the other characters more.
Great book. It made me feel sad, angry and determined all at the same time. The friendship between the main characters was heartwarming. Cant believe it took me this long to read it.
This is one of the best books I have read this year. This is a rare look at one aspect of slave life for black women--their sexual exploitation. It also looks at the all-too-common occurrence of slave children being owned by their white fathers, brothers and sisters. Searing. Wonderful.
