Picked this up expected to hate it. I usually find hyped books to be tedious and long. This one surprised me and I had to go buy a copy of my own after reading it. Loved, loved, loved it! Couldn't put it down.

an incredible book, couldn’t put it down even when i wanted to.

main takeaways: swedish people are nuts, keep *most* things to yourself, blonde=unrecognizable, and never run in the woods.

5 stars.

I really wanted to get into "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Stieg Larsson. Really I did. I tried very hard. Honest. But Part of me was left feeling somewhat ho hum about this book.

In the book, a disgraced campaigning journalist (Mikael Blomkvist) is asked to investigate the disappearance of a rich magnate's favourite niece, who vanished almost 40 years before. The magnate is dying, and wants one last throw of the dice before he slips off this mortal coil.

So off Blomkvist trots, teaming up with researcher Lisbeth Salander (the multi-tattooed girl in the title) to uncover all sorts of unspeakable goings on in the family as he tries to solve the case.

It wasn't a bad book, but part of me couldn't get behind the main characters. Blomkvist is too much the "trendy left-wing reporter" and Salander is just weird. I heard on the radio that men are supposed to find her attractive in some way (she's self-reliant, head strong, multilingual, bright without being geeky, and interesting), but part of me felt she was damaged goods. To me she seemed more the sociopath than challenged. This is a shame because I think Larsson was going for "challenging."

I will probably read more books in the series, but the second book had better be "tighter and more focused" than this one.

I'm so behind the curve. Don't care.

Apparently Scandinavia has yet to produce a mystery writer that I can't fall in love with. I've been told it's because I'm drawn to the dark characters.

The female protagonist is so, so dark, but so...her world is mostly black and white. If the author hadn't gone so deeply into her head, the book would have been wounded and limping. As it was, I found it to be very straightforward.

Some would say dark and depressing, but I would say she came out the other side, so that makes her a winner. She refused to be seen as a victim. Ever. On anyone's terms. Or even in her own eyes.

And I like the giant circle the plot made. Can't wait to read the next one.
