"Hearts can break. Yes. Hearts can break. Sometimes I think it would be better if we died when they did, but we don't."

As the book jacket states, Hearts in Atlantis is composed of 5 sequential short stories, interconnected through characters in the 1st story, (and best of the bunch), Low Men in Yellow Coats. The title story, Hearts in Atlantis, is a close second best. The Low Men in Yellow Coats story directly ties in to the Dark Tower universe -- which is amazing and why I am so in awe of Stephen King and his genius.

The Vietnam War is also a big theme in this book. The war changes everyone in King's stories and we see the repercussions for the ones who fought in Vietnam and the ones who stayed at home. Plenty to think about even after the stories are done!

I love these stories and how they all connected with each other.

The entire book was okay. Like so many people, I really liked the first story best. The rest of them were written beautifully but just not what I wanted from Stephen King. As I said, written beautifully, and if I had been in the mood for contemplative reading on the effects of the Vietnam War and that time period on people's lives I would have rated it higher but especially after the first story which had the horror/supernatural element, it was just kind of a "thud" to suddenly be dumped into slow, deep stories.
