I liked the first story (and its characters) and the full circle in the last story. The three stories in between however dragged a bit to a lot (especially the second story) and I found myself skimming certain parts. Definitely not my favourite King.

I would have given this book five stars except for the "Why We're in Vietnam" section. I just could not get into that part of the book.
Otherwise, I loved the interconnectedness of the five stories, with "Low Men in Yellow Coats" and "Hearts in Atlantis" being my favorites. Loving the game of Hearts myself, I wonder how I might have reacted to the ongoing almost 24-hour-games.
I found it interesting that each "story" focused on one of the earlier characters of "Low Men in Yellow Coats."

I read this book mainly for the Dark Tower connections as well as the fact that I really like the movie that was adapted from this book.
Unfortunately, this book falters after the first story and never fully recovers for me.
If the entire collection was as good as that first story, this would easily be a 5 star review.
I see why they ended up only really adapting the first and last story into the movie and gutted the rest. The last story is also heavily modified in the film version and does not bear too much resemblance to the one in the book.
Individual ratings for each story:
Low Men in Yellow Coats - 5/5
Hearts in Atlantis - 1.5/5
Blind Willie - 1/5
Why We're in Vietnam - 1.5/5
Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling - 3.5/5
I can only really recommend the first and last story in this collection which I feel are good even not knowing anything about the Dark Tower series, the rest of the stories do interconnect with these two portions but are nowhere near as good.
This does feel like something you should read if you are something of a Tower junkie though in order to get the full picture of Ted Brautigan's journey.
You may get more out of the other stories if you are of the boomer generation as it is heavy on the Vietnam War and the various societal impacts of that era.
