Too many descriptions of the size and shape of people’s bodies.

Good food! Interesting history, engaging mystery. Characters might be a little too good to be true, but overall, a pleasure to read. If you like Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti books, you'll enjoy Bruno.

This is the first in a series. I had read I think #3 first and then got this one out of the library. Given that I would classify these as "light reading", I don't happen to think it really matters the order in which they are read.
Did I find this an enjoyable read? Yes. Bruno is the Chief of Police in a small French village and he solves crimes.
Will I continue to read more in this series? Yes again.
So why the 3/5 rating? There are a couple of reasons. One, while Bruno likes to cook, which is laudable, there are sections that are just too long about the menu and the method of cooking involved. And two, in this book he runs across 3 absolutely beautiful women, just beautiful and since Bruno is single, we are left guessing for a bit about which one will end up with him in bed first. I mean, really, it's all a bit much.
If both the cooking and the beautiful women segments were edited, the book would be about 1/3 shorter. And that would suit me fine.

Lovely little murder mystery set in France. I enjoyed this one a lot more than I thought I would, mostly due to the engaging writing style.
This was an odd book. It dealt with atrocities committed during WWII, the rise of the far right in France all interspersed with very intricately detailed descriptions of food and cooking. It was kind of odd to have both happening at once. The ending was also strange and I am not sure really what to do with it. It was also mildly sexist and xenophobic despite appearing on the surface to take this issues head on.
Had to give this one up, the crime was more horrific and upsetting than I want to deal with.
Bruno seems like a nice character, but I probably won’t read any more.

The main character is an alcoholic and is constantly eating pate. As a sober vegan, I found myself cringing throughout the book and distracted from the actual plot, which might’ve only been 25% of the book. The rest is indulgence. Not the series for me.
An excellent mystery set in a small French town. The pace is slow but very satisfying, sort of like a French meal. A fantastic main character--flawed but good, patient, intelligent, capable. Reading Walker's novel is like being immersed in French culture as the finely crafted plot unfolds.
