I was not prepared for how good this book is. I was also not prepared for how emotional this book is. This is an absolute five star read for me.

Now, if you think this book isn't for you because it is historical fiction, I'm telling you, it is a story you will never forget. I've never really been a fan of history I actually hated history class in school growing up. But this book is the best historical fiction I've ever read.

The setting of this book is in France during World War II. And I know what you thinking, "A book about World War II? No thanks!" But just read on and let me convince you why you should read this book.

This book isn't so much about the battles and fighting during the war. The main focus is on the women living in France whose men are off fighting in the war. These women are not only having to survive with limited resources like food and clothing, but they're also navigating life with German soldiers occupying France. And for some of the women, actual German soldiers living in their homes with them and their children. The two sisters, Isabelle and Vienne, are the most courageous inspiring character I've read about. This book helps you understand just how truly awful of and experience it was for the women in France during this time.

Kristen Hannah's writing was so well done. You're easily able to understand not only the storyline but also what is going on in history during this time. She masterfully brings you through this story with a vivid view into each scene, and makes you feel so many complex emotions all the way through the book. It's an absolutely beautiful heart-wrenching story that's also full of hope and love.

I recommend you give this book a try. I really think you won't regret it.
