This is very heavy. I was never fond of historical fiction but this is so wonderfully written. I respect KH for writing this. Most of all I respect Isabelle and Vianne. They are fictional characters but I did a little research and read about the true events that inspired this book. And it is truly amazing. I loathed Vianne in the beginning but now I salute her. I salute every mother that went through war times. It is definitely not easy.

Now here I am 9 years later having finally read it, and it blew me away just as I knew it would. This is a very emotional read that introduces WWII in France making it all the way through the war and after. There is also a viewpoint set in 1995 which is the current day for the book, and I was totally thrown by who that ends up being. Not sure if I missed something or if that's what Hannah intended but at the end I was

Wow. That’s all I can say. This book has truly moved me. I was in tears reading the last sentence. The Nightingale will keep you guessing until the last page. It will tear at your heart strings, and it won’t stop pulling until you close the book. This is the most beautiful book I have read and I am very excited to read more Kristin Hannah!

One of the most deeply moving, harrowing, heartbreaking and phenomenal stories I’ve ever read.

Kristen Hannah does not steer away from the horrors of WWI, and in doing so tells a beautifully heartbreaking tale of bravery, loyalty, courage and love. The characters of Vianne and Isabelle are so perfectly written; I loved them both from the moment I started reading. The side characters are also incredibly written, with a story so profound and horrifying it is almost incomprehensible that such things happened less than 100 years ago.

This story will stick with me for a long, long time. I am so glad I’ve read it, but I write this emotionally-charged review with tears streaming down my face.

Five stars without a doubt.

The majority of the book was very slow moving which made it hard to read. Some parts of the book were really hard to read. Had to read a sentence and put the book down for a while.
