Fantastic read, especially as a new father. Writing is earnest. Though written by a woman in 2004, it seems to capture some of the pathos of the setting and perspective of an old preacher man on his way to dying.

It’s difficult to rate this book. It’s a beautifully written book and I found myself many times reading a passage that I wanted to remember forever-the language is gorgeous. However, I also found myself several times especially at the beginning ready to put it down and move on to something else. I’m glad I read it and I will always remember it-and maybe feel someday like 4 stars wasn’t enough.

I will admit that I was influenced in my enjoyment of this book by the conversations I had after reading it, and by the way it has stuck with me since putting it down. I originally picked it up as a break from Death and Life but returned to it during my solo fourth of july weekend camping trip, which was honestly an incredible setting for it. I did find myself fighting through some of the slower sections, but ad a meditation on god and parenthood and legacy, it is truly so special. The format alone is quite something, epistolary but allowing one to forget, sometimes, that it is a letter while John Ames meanders his way through leaving behind something of himself for his young son.
The ability of Robinson to so completely imagine the internal life of a fictional character, including the simultaneous self-deception and awareness of such, is really astounding. This story is beautiful in its simple humanity. If you like Wendell Berry, you will like this. But fair warning, the chapter-less style is unusual, although really well done and effective at conveying the structure of human thought.
Listened to the audio version the second time, which was still great but not quite as good. The poetry of the prose is hard to speak.
