This book has been on my to-read shelf for as long as I've been on Goodreads, I think. I tried to read it once before. I remember trying to read it while afloat in the pool. I just never could get into it (the book I mean, not the pool).

This year, I resolved to make a more strategic attack on my to-read list and I told myself I either needed to read this one for real or take it off my list. I read it. I'm glad I did. It was lovely.

I could feel bad about neglecting to read for so long a book that I ultimately enjoyed so much. I'm pretty certain, however, that a little more maturity on my part helped me to appreciate better the quiet and the subtle and the sweet.

I'm not saying this is an old-person book, because I am not an old person. Perhaps, though, it is best read when not floating in the pool.

The book aimed to reflect on our belief in god through the narrator. It also reflected on fatherly love. There are many connections you could make biblically with the characters. It was a bit slow at times, and truthfully not a lot happened in this book, but it was still a good read.

y'know when it feels like the right book has found you at the right time? marvelling at the wonder and mystery of creation etc. etc.

To be read slowly and savored. It's essentially a meditation on life, spirituality and what the narrator (a preacher...yes, I know, but trust me) feels is essential to impart to his young son. And the writing is excellent.

Maybe it's the preacher in me but, I have a feeling that this is a book I will re-visit again and again.
